Matthews currently leads McKinsey’s Healthcare and Life Sciences Practice in Africa, and began his career at the Firm in the US, prior to joining the Johannesburg Office in 2010.
His ambition is to expand the delivery of high-quality healthcare and to reduce systematic disparities in health in resource-poor settings, especially in Africa. To realize his mission, he advises leading public health and life sciences institutions that are at the forefront of addressing the needs of patients, caregivers, and society. Through his career, Matthews has amassed on-the-ground healthcare experience in more than 25 African countries and has published extensively on healthcare ecosystems in Africa.
Prior to McKinsey, Matthews was a Fellow at the Aspen Institute in India, focusing on digital delivery of healthcare services. He is an economist by training, with an MPhil from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a A.B. from Harvard College, where he was a Davis Scholar.
