Honourable Mmusi Kgafela was appointed by His Excellency the President of Botswana Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi as the Minister of Trade and Industry from April 2021 to date. Minister Kgafela previously served as the Minister of Infrastructure and
Housing Development, currently Ministry of Transport and Public Works from October 2019 to May 2021. He successfully championed the increase of Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) rental that was never increased for the past 16 years to match the market rate and that decision was backed by the government. At the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Honourable Kgafela facilitated the enactment of the Economic Inclusion Act in July 2021 to promote citizen participation in the development and growth of the economy. In August 2022, he approved the Statutory Instrument on restriction on importation of school uniform to create wealth and employment for Batswana. He further launched the National Quality Policy passed by
Parliament in April 2022 that serves as a part of a broader industrial plan for diversification and export strategies that seek the development of quality products and services to enhance trade.
