Bassirou Diomaye Faye, born on March 25, 1980 in Ndiaganiao, is a Senegalese finance inspector and statesman, President of Senegal since April 2, 2024.
Youth, Education, and Early Political Career
Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye was born on March 25, 1980 in Ndiaganiao, in the M’bour department (Thiès region).
He studied law at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and joined the National School of Administration of Senegal. A public finance inspector and trade unionist, he served as secretary general of the Tax and Domain Union.
Apart from his professional activities in law, taxation, finance, and economics, Bassirou Diomaye Faye writes poetry and has an interest in agriculture and livestock. During his leisure time, especially during the rainy season, he works in the fields of his village where he notably produces papayas.
He entered politics with the Patriotic Senegalese Party for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF) since its creation in 2014. While Ousmane Sonko is the leader and main figure of the party, Bassirou Diomaye Faye is its architect, handling doctrine and internal organization. In October 2022, he became secretary general and managed the party’s frameworks.
2024 Presidential Election and Release
Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye thus won the 2024 presidential election at the age of 44, becoming the youngest elected president in the country’s history.
President of the Republic
Bassirou Diomaye Faye was inaugurated as President of the Republic on April 2, 2024. At 44 years old, he became the youngest person to hold this office. He appointed Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister on the same day. The new government was appointed by Diomaye Faye on April 5.
