Professor, University of Cape Town
Carlos Lopes is a professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, University of Cape Town and an affiliate professor at Sciences Po, Paris. He has held senior positions at the United Nations, including Political Director to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa from 2012 to 2016. He was appointed in 2018 as the African Union’s High Representative for Partnerships with Europe and is a member of the organization’s reform team led by President Paul Kagame. He chairs the board of the African Climate Foundation.
