Regional Vice President for Africa, IFC
Ethiopis Tafara is IFC’s Regional Vice President for Africa, overseeing a $20 billion committed portfolio and leading more than 800 staff working to expand the private sector’s role across financial services, manufacturing, agribusiness, infrastructure, and services. He previously served as Vice President, Chief Risk, Legal & Sustainability Officer and Partnerships at MIGA, and earlier as IFC’s Vice President and General Counsel, where he led legal, compliance, and ESG functions and was named to the Financial Times Global GC 25 in 2018. Before joining the World Bank Group, Mr. Tafara spent nearly two decades at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, including as Director of the Office of International Affairs, and has held senior roles across global regulatory and standard‑setting bodies. He holds a JD from Georgetown University Law Center and an AB from Princeton University, and is a U.S. national of Ethiopian origin who speaks Amharic, French, Italian, Spanish, and English.
