Nomusa DUBE-NCUBE

Premier, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government

Born in KwaMashu township, Ambassador Nomusa Dube-Ncube made history on 10 August 2022 when she was sworn-in as the first female Premier of KwaZulu-Natal since South Africa’s democratic dispensation in 1994. Premier Dube-Ncube is an activist of the African National Congress and her passion lies in honouring the contribution of women and youth towards nation-building and the country’s transformative agenda.
In her early years, she worked for organisations such as the National Association of Democratic Lawyers, IDASA, Lawyers for Human Rights and National Education Council Committee.
Prior to her deployment as Premier, she was the Member of the Executive Council responsible for the Finance Portfolio. She was previously MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal. Premier Dube-Ncube also served as MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for two terms between 2009 and 2019. Premier Dube-Ncube is a seasoned local government practitioner who participated in a number of policy reference groups, public administration and community development research and position papers. Premier Dube-Ncube is an astute policy maker, who holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is currently studying towards her PhD.
Among Premier Dube-Ncube’s prestigious accolades and achievements includes having served as a Member of the Senate Council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Chairperson of the Gender Working Group of African Union of Local Authorities as well as Member of SALGA National Executive Committee, where she served as the Deputy Secretary for two terms having been involved in the drafting of the local government laws.
Premier Dube-Ncube was also the Leader of Government Business within the Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal, a critical position she held with great diligence and distinction until her appointment as the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal.
Premier Dube-Ncube is also the former Mayor of the North Central Local Council – before it was amalgamated with several others to form what is now known as the eThekwini Municipality. Subsequent to that, she was appointed the Speaker of the Municipality. Premier Dube-Ncube also served as Ambassador to the Czech Republic.
Endowed with a lifelong passion of driving the empowerment of small and emerging businesses, at EDTEA, Premier Dube-Ncube was charged with ensuring that the province’s economic growth is sustained from SMMEs to big business and industries.
