In 2020, the cultural and creative industries (CCI) represented 3% of Africa’s GDP (compared to 11% in the US). But the potential for growth is huge with revenue from the CCI climbing by $4.2bn per year. The phenomenal success of the blockbuster Black Panther and the international renown of the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are just two of a host of examples illustrating the surge in genuine African soft power. But the sector needs financing and structure if it is to convert this trend into an opportunity for local growth. How can Africa develop its own business models in order to capitalise on its cultural and creative influence?
